ION CHANNEL EXPERTS

Thomas Jentsch

Thomas Jentsch

Professor; FMP, MDC and Charité Berlin, Germany

Prof. Jentsch is a pioneer in ion channel research, best known for discovering the first chloride channel gene (ClC-0) and defining the CLC family. He revealed that many CLC proteins are Cl⁻/H⁺ exchangers, transforming our understanding of membrane transport. His mouse models helped uncover the roles of CLCs in the brain, kidney, and muscle, and their links to diseases like epilepsy and deafness.

Christian Wahl-Schott

Professorship of Cardiovascular Physiology and Pathophysiology, LMU Munich, Germany

Prof. Christian Wahl-Schott is Chair of Cardiovascular Physiology at LMU Munich. His research focuses on hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels and their roles in cardiac rhythm and neuronal excitability. In parallel, he has contributed to studies of endolysosomal ion channels such as TPCs, revealing their impact on lipid metabolism and rare diseases. His work bridges membrane electrophysiology and organellar signaling.

Christian Wahl-Schott
Eric Boué-Grabot

Eric Boué-Grabot

Deputy Director, Neurodegenerative Disease Institute (IMN), University of Bordeaux.

Dr. Boué-Grabot has revealed novel molecular and functional roles of P2X channels in neuroinflammation, synaptic plasticity, and diseases such as ALS, pain, epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders. Combining electrophysiology, imaging, and behavioral studies in rodent models, his lab also develops transgenic mice to explore microglial versus neuronal receptor functions.

Martin Biel

Chair of Pharmacology, LMU Munich, Germany.

Prof. Biel has significantly advanced our understanding of ion channels, including HCN and TPC channels, in physiology and disease. He is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and co-founder of ViGeneron GmbH. His recent work also explores gene therapy strategies targeting the retina.
